Christmas Artwalk Silent Auction for Clean Water and Holigaze Holiday Sale

On Thursday December 9th, as part of the 2nd Thursday West Seattle Art Walk , the community room in ginomai will be holding a silent auction of work donated by some ginomai artists as well as artists from West Seattle Christian Church. The proceeds will go towards drilling a fresh water well in a village in Honduras in August 2011. The pictures here are from a just completed trip to drill a well in Guatemala. The auction will take place from 6-9pm during the art walk and is both an opportunity to purchase some great pieces for Christmas as well as supporting a great cause. This is all part of West Seattle Christians annual participation in Advent Conspiracy .

after living in other parts of the country for the previous 10 years.
His "Reflecting on Seattle" series shows a different perspective of
our city; a unique and fascinating view of the place that we all know
and love.
Scott uses very low-tech equipment. His pictures are presented as he saw them. His use of water and light reflection shows the world as he sees it; this is Seattle through his eyes."

The works of painter Rajaa Gharbi are on display from December 5th to December 21st, at GINOMAI’s Community Room for public and private viewing and mark the first Solo public showing in West Seattle of the Tunisian-international artist.
Gharbi, a Seattle resident, is a painter, poet, and filmmaker whose paintings and work www.rajaagharbi.com are highly sought after in the United States and internationally by private collections, galleries, museums and scholarly reviewers. Her career has spanned her lifetime and is born from her life experience, the tradition of story telling within her family, the vivid imagery from her home country, her work in film and languages, as well as the travels and life she has chosen and created.
Gharbi will present a body of semi-abstract paintings bursting with color, nuance, mystique, and beauty. Her works take the viewer into a world that hits one on a guttural level. They show evidence of her birth in a foreign land and maturing in both her native Mediterranean and the Northwest, where she has resided for many years. The vivid colors and brush strokes give way to poetic explorations in ancient scripts, small sketches and slashes, and worlds that balance between reality and mysticism.
“I paint images that explore real or imagined, ancient or contemporary stories and myths. Sometimes my paintings are last images of dreams or film fade-in-fade-out frames where the fantastical and the realistic converge in liquid movements and miniaturized, subdued or sweeping contrasts of light and dark. I like to explore human inner emotional and intellectual landscapes or our collective psyches.” Her use of gouache, acrylic, pen, and ink through layer upon layer invites each viewer to take a closer look and engage with the work on an intensely personal plane.

An artist’s reception for Gharbi will be held at GINOMAI Community Room on December 9th from 6 to 8 pm.

The show will also be open for the West Seattle Art Walk December 10th from 5:30 to 9 pm.

Tonight and every Wednesday night for as long as he's on, we'll be hosting a community "Project Runway" party in the community room to cheer on Blayne from Hotwire. Doors open @ 8pm and the show begins @ 9 on the big screen. This is an all ages event. Bring your own non-alcoholic drinks if you'd like. Lora is providing coffee from Hotwire and desserts are also encouraged. Off street parking is available in the lot.

This week ginomai welcomes local artists Wayne Johnson, Lilach Ozan, and vblast to the community room for the 2nd Thursday West Seattle Art Walk. We'll be open from 6 to 9 along with 22 other locations in West Seattle who will be showing that evening. Remember, this is a great place to begin the walk as we have a free off street lot on 42nd ave SW (corner of Genesee)on the south side of our building. Most of the venues are within a 2 block walk. A big thank you to all who participated in the Art Walk last night. It is making a difference and your willingness to be here and be open is continuing to make this a great stop on the walk. It also makes this a fun place to hang out for the evening.
Just a reminder that our holiday show begins in the community room in a few weeks. There is a reception on Sunday afternoon, December 2nd @ 12:30 that everyone is invited to.
Work continues to progress as volunteer time allows. The new projects coming soon are:

September Art Walk

The September Art Walk is coming next Thursday the 13th from 6-9pm. We will be welcoming a number of artists from the West Seattle Seniors Center who will be showing in our freshly updated community room. There will also be a reception there for those artists as well as any of our residents who have their studios open that evening. We now have both upstairs and downstairs studios in use so make sure that you plan to visit both floors as well as the community room. We also encourage everyone to take advantage of our parking lot for free off street parking to begin your walk from. We are located on the north end of the junction at the corner of Genesee and 41st, 1 block east of California Ave in the former West Seattle Christian School building.

Art Walk and Welcome

This past month has been busy around here. We've enjoyed hosting ArtsWest Summer musical camp. They've been rehearsing for their production of "School House Rock" which will be presented at the end of the month @ ArtsWest. We are also welcoming some new artists to the family as the 2nd floor spaces are finally being ready for use. Marc Yeager and Julie Yarwood are the first to officially move in. Three more, Rajaa Gharbi, Tom Wells, and Trisha Kieman, will be moving in during the next few weeks. This brings a total to 14 artists plus the Unified Outreach team who are enjoying studio space here.
For this months Art Walk on the 9th, we will not have the community room open as the ArtsWest group will still be in there and it is being readied for renovation. Our goal is to have it ready for the September walk on the 13th. I would like to encourage you, if you can do it, to have your studios open though on the 9th.

SummerFest and the Artwalk

Artwalk is happening again next week. This month we'll begin having a reception atmosphere for all of our resident artists as well as any from the community who will be joining us that evening. Hope to see you there!....Thank you to all who open your studios on that night, I've had amazing feedback from people who stop by and interact with you.

Also, don't forget the booth in the SummerFest. I'd love to have as many of our group represented as possible. If you can offer anything for the weekend, please contact me asap. If you can volunteer a few hours anytime during the weekend that would be great also. The booth will go up on Thursday evening. I'll update you with its location soon.

Art Walk and "the Wall"

We'll be sitting out this month's Art Walk due to anticipated work on the south west wall of the building. The good news is that when we reconnect for next months "walk" we'll be ready with a newly finished "community room" for showing as well as a reception atmosphere for each months walk. We are still in search of more artists from the West Seattle community who would be interested in having their work in the monthly art walks. Ginomai is an important part of the monthly "Junction Art Walk". On the second Tuesday of each month, from 6-9pm, our building will be open to the public to help create a link between the community and the artists who live and create here. Each of the artists in ginomai may have their studios open that evening. Also, beginning in May, the "gallery room" will be open to display some of their work. We'd also like to announce the availablity of the "gallery room" to other local community artists who might like a place to share their work for the evening of the art walk.

A Gathering

In order to better discover how those who make up this community of artists feel about our ability to have an influence in the community, we'll be having a gathering of all those involved with "ginomai" on Saturday morning April 7th @ 8:30am. The gathering will take place on the lower level in the northwest corner room (across the hall from Patricia's studio. I'll be updating you on some building issues and stuff that you need to know over the course of the next few months. I'm also interested in your feedback about the possibilities for the center for promoting your work and providing inspiration to the West Seattle Community. I know everyone is busy. It's Easter weekend, so needless to say I'm busy, but this is important enough to get us all together for about an hour. Coffee, etc will be provided. This past year saw the passing of a long time friend, West Seattle Christian School. Initially saddened by its loss, we have continually sought a way to use some of the space that it occupied in such a way that both we at West Seattle Christian Church as well as the community could benefit. We feel that we have found an exciting and worthy purpose for the immediate future. It is our desire to offer affordable studio space to a growing population of West Seattle artists. The concept is called "ginomai" which is greek, meaning "to cause to be". It seems natural for us to offer this space as a source of inspiration and creativity since we serve the one who spoke all creation into existence. Because of our tax exempt status, we are not able to rent these spaces. This also works well for the art community because space in this area is ridiculously expensive. What we have done is to set a scale of "suggested donation" for each space which will cover the expenses of lights, water, along with some additional cleaning services. Below is a list of space that will be available on or around December 1:

All of our space has been spoken for, but we have created a waiting list. If you are interested, please contact us.

1 room 11'x 16' x (8.5' ceiling) (tile floors, flourescent lighting, 4 feet of windows along 1 wall)
2 rooms each 11' x 20' x(8.5'ceilings) same flooring/lighting/windows as room above
1 room 11' x 8' x(8.5' ceiling) (carpeted floor, same lighting and windows)
*** all of these rooms will have some type of storage or cupboard space as desired. Building is equipped with restrooms. Each room will have its own lock

Because of insurance and state regulations we are limited in our ability to have hazardous or flammable materials on site. Exceptions are cleaning fluids, paint, etc. We are not able to house artists who use fire or flame in the creation of their work.

This is a No Smoking facility.

Even though we are a church, we do not require any commitment to any specific faith or religious belief, nor do we require it's influence in the creations of your work. A sample of your work should be submitted (website or emailed images are acceptable) in order to be considered for availble space. We do reserve the right to protect the use of the facility from work that might be offensive to a general public. Anything that could be considered for display in general public gathering places would be encouraged. These spaces will be given on a quarterly commitment that can be renewable based on mutual agreement between the artist and the organization. When the space is gone, a waiting list will be maintained for when space becomes available. We look to have outlets to show artist works for display and sale in the future.
